NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF PORTAL HYPERTENSION IN DOGS

Hisham Ahmed Mohamed;

Abstract

The ultimate result of liver cirrhosis is the development of portal hypertension. This occurs even if the original cause of cirrhosis is eliminated. Liver cirrhosis represent the initiative stimulus that raises the portal venous pressure which thereafter been maintained by the splanchnic hyperdynamic syndrome to complete the vicious circle.

The main plan of our study is to interrupt this circle and based on two principles; the proved safety of hepatic arterial ligation and the understanding of the pathophysiological changes behind this disease.

In this work, 12 canine models had undergone iatrogenic induction of portal hypertension after common bile duct ligation for 2 weeks. Transection of the hepatic artery and anastomosis of its distal end with the side of the portal vein was done.
