RANDOMISED COMPERATIVE STUDY BETWEEN OPEN CHOLECYSTECTOMY AND I APAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY

Abstract


During the period fimn August 1991 to March 1995, seventy nine patients (12 males and 67 females) with documented chronic calculous cholecystitis were prospectively studied in this work. The patients were' admitted to the surgical department of Alexandria University Hospital.


The work aimed at companson between standard and laparoscopic cholecystectomy as regards the indications and patient selection, technique feasibility and difficulties, postoperative early and late morbidity and study of cost effectiveness.


Patients' history and clinical examination, laboratory investigations including liver profile, oral cholecystectomy and ultrasonographic examination of the liver and biliary tree. The patients were then randomized to have either standard or laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure. Out of the forty two patients entitled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure thirty eight patients were successfully operated upon while in four patients conversion to the open surgery was mandatory, and hence, the standard cholecystectomy group comprised forty one patients.
