Mohammed Ali Ezzat;

Abstract

The study was conducted on ninety patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus for more than 5 years with the changes of diabetic retinopathy during fundus examination of each patient at the run in phase of the study with their age group ranging from twenty to fifty years, normal kidney functions and not known to have any malignant, cardiovascular, chronic liver nor autoimmune diseases. These patients entered the run in phase of the study and after exclusion of twenty nine patients based on the exclusion criteria and refusal of the consent; sixty one patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups; group 1 received Pentoxifylline 400 mg three times per day and group 2 received Ramipril 2.5 mg once daily for six months to study the effect of adding the Pentoxifylline as an antiproteinuric agent and its correlation with the eGFR and HbA1c.
Regular monthly follow up visits were scheduled with follow up of the proteinuria level using spot urinary protein/creatinine ratio at the third and the sixth month from the start of the randomization phase, HbA1c was measured at the run in phase and after 6 months from starting randomization and eGFR was calculated also at the same intervals as the HbA1c.
