Plasma Free Carnitine In Children with Epilepsy

Sawsan Fetouh Anwar Ghanem;

Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the world's oldest recognized conditions which can affect the quality of life for people with disorder and their families particularly children. Prolonged antiepileptic drugs treatment can result in secondary carnitine deficiency.

This study was conducted on forty epileptic patients aged from two to fifteen years, patients was recruited randomly from the pediatric neurology clinic at Ain Shams University treated with antiepileptic drugs as mono or polytherapy from May 2011 to December 2011.

Patients were divided into eight patients newly diagnosed as primary epilepsy, nine patients were on valproate, eight patients on carbamazepine, seven patients on levetiractam, while eight patients on polytherapy and forty patient age and sex matched healthy children served as control.

All patients were selected as idiopathic etiology, thirty four patient with generalized seizures and six patients with focal seizures.

All cases were subjected to complete physical, detailed neurological examinations and complete investigation with special emphasis on complete blood picture, liver functions tests, plasma free carnitine, EEG, and CT brain.

Age and gender didn’t show any significant difference between patients and control group, and no significant difference in patients on monotherapy and polytherapy regardless the gender and the type of seizures.

Plasma free carnitine level was significantly lower in the patients group treated with antiepileptic drugs than in control group. Moreover the longer the duration of antiepileptic drugs treatment and the duration of disease the more decrease of plasma free carnitine levels.
