Abstract

There ts an important relationship between dentistry and cardiology .
Anaesthesia, psychological stress, extent and duration of surgical trauma are important factors affecting cardiac patients who need special attention and care fi"otn oral surgeon by understanding the
cardiac condition of their patients and psychological care before,
i
during and after surgical procedures.

'All facilities of emergency treatment, electrocardio :,>raphic monitoring for uncontrolled patients, premedication, sedation and selection of anaesthetic solution and technique should have greater nttcntion. (I)
Heart rate and rhythm, even in clinically normal subjects can exhibit a wide range of daily variations as body responds to changes in physical exertion, emotional state and neurohumoral tone.

Obviously a standard elevtrocardiogram (ECG) which records the electrical activity of the heart during the course of several seconds with the patients at rest provides limited infommtion regarding the response of the heart to minor oral surgical procedures.
However the development of the methods for continuous recording and analysis ofECG over prolonged periods of ambulatory activity -Holter monitor- cnn provide accurate data and infonnation about. ·cardiac condition and all the changes in cardinc rhythm which may occur continuously f(JJiowing nnaesthesia and I or surgery.
