A PROSPECTIVE STUDY FOR THE COMMON DERMATOLOGICAL DISEASES AMONG PRISONERS IN CAIRO PRISON

Abstract


SUMMARY
A
Prison is the place like other communal places where we can find specific diseases more than normal community itself. Prisons are defined as detention centers operated by state and federal government for prisoners who have been sentenced for more than one year of incarceration.
Not only the risk of getting contagious diseases such as scabies, pediculosis, dermatophytosis and viral infections is higher but also the stressful conditions in prisons can cause the aggravation of some dermatological diseases such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, acne and alopecia areata.
The study was carried out in Cairo prison. The survey was carried out from December 2014 to March 2015 and included 300 male prisoners detained in jails in Cairo prison for 6 months at least.
Male prisoners detained in jails in cairo prison for at least 6 months and complaining of any dermatological disease.
Thorough history taking regarding:
1. Demographic data: age and occupation.
2. Duration of imprisonment.
3. History of chronic diseases example diabetes and hypertention, past history of dermatological disease, Family history for dermatological disease and special habits of medical importance such as smoking.
Distribution of the dermatological diseases among the studied subjects shows that scabies and pytriasis versicolour were found to be the most common diseases among them (8.7% & 4.7%) respectively and xerosis & Pytriasis alba were found to be the least (0,3% & 0.3) respectively
Risk factors among the studied subjects shows that 54 of the whole study population had positive past history of dermatological disease.
Occupation of the studied subjects shows that 182 of them had no work inside the prison (60.7%) and 118 of them had occupation inside the prison (39.3), whereas the most common occupations were builders (7,7%) , porters (6,7%) and cleaners (6,0) respectively.
Comparison between subjects with duration of imprisonment < 9 months and duration > 9 months regarding risk factors was found to be significant with smoking and
