Effect of Perceived Organizational Support on Professional Commitment among Nursing Teaching StaffMembers and Their Assistants

Abstract


Teaching necessitates passion, dedication, and commitment. In the nursing education system, engage in multiple roles; teaching, clinical, research and service are expected from nursing teachers. These roles are complex in fulfilling it's, and require a level of personal engagement and commitment. With the escalating demands and new challenges inherent in the current educational climate. It has become imperative to gain further insight into teacher commitment due to its close association with concepts such as quality of teaching, teacher adaptability, attendance, retention. Committed teachers make a difference to the success of the school and the learning of the students (Crosswell, 2006). Perception of organizational support is an important resource that is getting admired day by day in the management sphere of modern business world especially in the service sector, serves in determining professional commitment among teachers.
The aim of this study was to assess the perceived organizational support and their effect on professional commitment among nursing teaching staff members and their assistants through, assessing level of organizational support as perceived by nursing teaching staff members and their assistants and measuring level of professional commitment among nursing teaching staff members and their assistants and finding out the effect of perceived organizational support on professional commitment among nursing teaching staff members and their assistants.
The descriptive, correlational study design was conducted at various scientific departments affiliated to Faculty of Nursing, Ain Shams University. These departments are: medical surgical nursing departments, maternal and child health nursing department, pediatric nursing department, community health nursing department, psychiatric and mental health nursing department, nursing administration department. It included (85) nursing teaching staff members and (70) assistant faculty members.
Data were collected by using two types of tools namely, perceived organizational support survey which perceived organizational support survey with 12 statements and professional commitment scale which consist of (24) items grouped into three dimensions as follows : Affective, continuance and normative professional commitment .The tool was pilot tested on about 10% of the number of nursing teaching staff members and assistant faculty members required for the ,and it was finalized accordingly . the total time consumed in the process of data collection was two months .the study protocol was approved by scientific research ethics committee in the Faculty of Nursing at Ain Shams University .
