EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS OF SURGICAL TREATMENT OF UNUNTTED FRACTURE SCAPHOID USING A DISTO-PROXIMAL CORTICAL BONE PEG

Abstract


The aim of this work was to evaluate the results of treatment of non united fractures of the scaphoid bone by using disto proximal bone peg graft derived from upper end ulna.

Twenty one cases were treated by this method, follow up and were included in the assessment of the results

The age of patients ranged from eighteen to thirty five years with an average of twenty one years. The highest incidence of the fracture was in the age group "20-30" years. All patients included in the work were males. The right side was affected in fourteen cases 66.6%.the left side was affected in seven cases 33.4%.

Fourteen patients were heavy manual workers 66.6%; three were athletes 14.4% and four were students [light manual] 19%.

Thirteen patients 61.9% gave definite history of forced dorsiflexion of the wrist, five patients 23.8% could not recall the exact mechanism of trauma and the remaining three patients 14.3% are with direct trauma to the wrist.

Seventeen patients 80.9% had waist fractures. The remaining four patients 19.1% had proximal third fractures; there were no cases with fracture of the distal third.

The time lag before operations ranged from 6-18 months.


All these cases were treated by using disto proximal bone peg graft.
