Correlation Between Vitamin D And Liver Steatosis Among Egyptian Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C

Mai Mohamed Sami;

Abstract

he aim beyond this study was to study the relationship between serum level of vitamin D and histopathological severity of hepatic steatosis in CHC patients and to study the correlation between serum level of vitamin D and both of HCV viral load and HOMA-IR on 50 Egyptian patients with chronic hepatitis C.
To fulfil this purpose, all patients were subjected to detailed history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including CBC, liver function tests, HCV-RNA PCR, lipid profile, fasting blood glucose level, serum level of vitamin D. Assessment of insulin resistance was done via HOMA-IR. Liver biopsy was used as a gold standard for determination of liver steatosis and fibrosis.
The participants’ age ranged from 25 to 55 years with a mean of 38.96±6.96. Their BMI ranged from 20.30 to 24.90 with a mean of 23.30±1.17. The participants’ insulin level ranged from 2.50 to 187.40 with a mean of 16.98±33.46 while HOMA-IR level ranged from 0.40 to 49.50 with a mean of 4.15±8.07.
Among 50 included patients, those with bright liver were the most common (n=23, 46%), while those with cirrhotic liver were the least common (n=3, 6%).
