A Medicolegal Study on Electrophysiological Evaluation of Nerve Affection After Trauma to the Extremities
Emad Fawzy Manna'a;
Abstract
Limb injuries are one of the most important injuries of the body. Though their fatality rate may be low, yet the residual infirmities may be great. Patients with trauma to the extremities may sustain multisystem injury i.e. damage to most components of limbs, skin, bones, tendons, nerves and vascular structures. This will be determined by the location and severity of blow.
The present study was conducted with the ann to evaluate the problem of nerve injury in trauma to the extremities and to correlate between clinical and electrophysiologic studies.
It was carried out on 36 patients suffering from limb injuries and attending the Department of Physical Medicine at the Main Alexandria University Hospital from the first of January 1999 to the end of June 1999.
It was found that males outnumbered females, with mean age
28.58±13.16 years for males and 36.42±!2.44 year for females.
The prevalent pattern of injury was the accidental one and the most frequent type of injury was the incised wound (36.11%). In 91.67% of cases the lesion was in the upper limb.
