LEFT VENTRICULAR FUNCTION IN CHILDREN WITH END STAGE .RENAL FAILURE ON MAINTENANCE HEMODIALYSIS

Hani Mahmoud Adel Abd El-Moneim;

Abstract

Cardiovascular complications account for nearly 50o/o of deaths in children with end stage renal failure. Despite this, the underlying cardiac pathophysiology is not fully llllderstood. These facts were the motive for the present work which aimed at studying the left ventricular function, using echocardiography in Egyptian children with end stage renal failure (ESRF) on maintenance hemodialysis.

The study was conducted on twelve children with ESRF on maintenance hemodialysis, with mean duration of dialysis of 1.6 ± 1 years, in the Dialysis Unit of the Alexandria University Children's Hospital. They were 6 males and 6 females, their age ranged from 5-14 years with a mean age of 10.5 ± 2.6 years. Ten age-and sex matched healthy children were included in the study as a control group after informed parental consent.

The children included in the study were subjected to the following:

1. History taking and retrieval of file data of patients.

2. Physical examination with special emphasis on the cardiovascular system.

3. Laboratory investigations including hemoglobin level, serum sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and creatinine; and blood urea, bicarbonate and PH.
4. X-ray film of the chest and heart.

5. Twelve-leads ECG.
