Diagnostic Laparoscopy in Young Female Patients with Suspected Acute Appendicitis How accurate is it ?
Ahmed Saleh Moustafa;
Abstract
Diagnostic laparoscopy should be performed in women, who present with a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis to confinn the diagnosis and avoid an unnecessary laparotomy. When .acute appendicitis is confinned, appendectomy may be performed laparoscopically.
Although some authors considered that despite laparoscopic appendectomy is safe and effective, it is expensive and overall has no greatly significant advantages over open appendectomy. Others concluded that in young women with right lower abdominal pain, laparoscopy gives precise diagnosis and reduces the rate of negative appendectomies. A third group of surgeons suggested a "third way" policy; that is all women of child-bearing age suspected of having acute appendicitis should under go diagnostic laparoscopy prior to the planned appendectomy, regardless of the certainty of the preoperative diagnosis.
Tllis study aim evaluating the accuracy of diagnostic l aparoscopy in young females whom l- resents with clinicall y suspected acute appendicitis.
Diagnostic laparoscopy will be performed for females in the child bearing period who present with the clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Thereafter, for all patients laparoscopic appendectomy was done.
Histopathological examination of the removed appendix will be depended on to evaluate the accuracy of diagnostic laparoscopy.
