Two Stage versus One Stage Revision Arthroplasty for Infected Total Knee Replacement

Salah Mohammed Salah El Din Hussein;

Abstract

The objective of this study is to compare the clinical, radiographic and surgical outcomes among patients undergoing revision arthroplasty for infected total knee replacement performed via the two stage versus one stage revision arthroplasty.
We searched numerous sources and eventually included 13 studies. In terms of re-infection rate and functional outcomes. Pooled estimates showed a significant difference in favor of the two stage revision arthroplasty in terms of lower re-infection and better functional outcome. Current evidence comparing outcomes following the two revision strategies does not demonstrate clear superiority of either approach.
Until more rigorous, randomized evidence is available, we recommend choice of the revision arthroplasty merthod for infected total knee arthroplasty to be based on patient characteristics, surgeon experience and surgeon and patient preference`
