Abstract


Half a million years ago, Java man suffered from osteoarthritis of the hip. Preserved skeletons show that osteoarthritis and rheumatoid diseases have afflicted man since earliest times.
Means to control the pain of osteoarthritis of the hip were meager in the days before surgery. At stick or a crutch, and the medicines available for pain relief were all one had.
But man 's imaginations have no bounds, and he has the ability to create


from these imaginings. Surgery became a positive approach to the painful


hip.




Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has beell P-rQv..en to decrease a patient's pain and improve function and quality of life. This procedure has been performed successfully in the United States since 1960. Follow-up data suggest long-term success with a decreasing rate of complications and low rate of revision. More than 168,000 THA procedures are performed in the United States every year. There is an 80% chance these hip replacements will last at least 20 years. Current improvements in hip designs
