Study of Developmental Motor Coordination Disorders in Children with ADHD

Abstract


Background Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorder affecting children, it is associated with high rates of comorbidity including motor disorders. Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neuro motor condition, in which motor problems are below expectations for the child chronological age, and it interferes with academic achievement or activities of daily living.
Aim: To detect co-occurrence of DCD in children with ADHD; and to assess the relation between DCD and ADHD and its determinants.
Methods: the study was conducted on 96 child, aged from 5- 10 years who attended the unit of children with special needs in (El Agoza Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Centre of Military Force) and diagnosed as having ADHD in a period of one year. Conner’s rating scale-Revised: short form, Wechsler intelligence scale for children, Socioeconomic status Questionnaire, Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire and Movement Assessment Battery for Children second edition were used.
Results: (48%) of children had (DCD: 16 child (16.7%) had mild to moderate DCD (at risk group), and 30 child (31.3%) had severe DCD (significant group), while 50 child (52%) did not have motor impairment (no DCD group). There was a statistically significant difference between DCD and ADH
