Practical Study For The Development of Gamma-Rays Shielding Materials

AHMED ALI BAKR EL KANAWI;

Abstract

Since three years ago; at the beginning of 1989, the attempt was started to form an alloy constitutes of four elements (which are available in nature) by melting processes. The scope of'this idea; is to produce an alloy sufficiently enough to play the same roles already have been taken by the other shielding materials, such as lead, concrete,...etc. However, the attempt has become a reality, by forming a new, Gamma-rays shields.
The new shielding materials for Gamma rays have been

developed from the mixture of four elements, (i.e., Cu, Fe, Pb, and All, by weight percentages to form the new alloys,
such as s2,s2, and s3.
The temperatures for the formation of the previously mentioned alloys are l224°c, l268°C, and l308°C respectively. And, the alloys have the Simple Cub Centre Crystal (SCC) atomic structures.
But the attenuation percentages of 0.662 MeV, Gamma-rays

photons (85%), from caesium-137 source, at the thickness of

0.18 em,for the alloys (s2,s2• and s3), and lead shield (Pb),
are, 11.21%, 11.48%, 14.53%, and 19.53% respectively.

The densities of the alloys are determined practically

and

found to be 6.01 4% gm/cm3 , for both
2

and s2 with regard

to s
3

, the density is 8.13%+3% gm/cm3 .
