EVALUATION OF NAÏVE/MEMORY T-CELL IN CHILDREN WITH SEVERE INFECTIONS

Mohammed Elsayed Mohammed Lotfy;

Abstract

Primary immune deficiency diseases (PID) comprise a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders that affect distinct components of the innate and adaptive immune system, such as neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, complement proteins, NK cells, as well as T and B lymphocytes (Sponzilli and Notarangelo, 2011).
Assessment of a combined T and B cell defect requires measurement of CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD19+ and CD3-CD56+ cells together with assessment of both CD4+CD45RA+, (naïve) cells and CD4+CD45RO+ (memory) cells (de Vries et al., 2012).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate naïve and memory T cells among patients with severe and recurrent infections and its relation to frequency of infection and presence of other associated immunological laboratory abnormalities.
This cross-sectional study included 30 patients with recurrent and severe infections who were enrolled from the outpatient clinic, pediatric ward and pediatric intensive care unit of Children's Hospital, Ain-Shams University. They were evaluated with detailed history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations included complete blood count with differential white blood cell count and flowcytometric assessment of T-cells (CD3+, CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+), B-cells (CD19+), natural killer cells (CD3-CD56+) and CD4+CD45RO+, CD4+ CD45RA+.
