ROLE OF MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING AND ULTRASONOGRAPHY IN EVALUATION OF TRAUMATIC KNEE LESIONS
HOSSAM ABD ELHAFEEZ ZYTON;
Abstract
The knee joint is one of the most commonly injured joints in the body. Because of its complex structures, the joint is suspected to numerous pathologies and due to the recent increase in various sport activities; there has been a parallel increase in sport-induced internal derangements of the knee.
The role of conventional X-rays has been well understood in evaluation of bony lesions; particularly fractures; yet they are of limited value in assessment of soft tissue injuries.
The aim of this work was to study the role of MRJ and
ultrasonography as diagnostic tools in the assessment of knee lesions.
One hundered and twenty patient's admitted to orthopedic depatement of Tanta university hospital complaining of various knee lesions were subjected to the full history taking, thorough clinical examination, plain X-ray, ultrasonography and MRl examinations. One hundered patients were subjected to arthroscopy of the knee.
In this study, it was considered that the arthroscopy finding and arthrotomy results are the final diagnosis in I 00 cases. In the other 20 cases, we considered the final clinical opinion to be the judge.
The ages of patients ranged from 10 to 70 years. Only 32.5% of patients were females & 67.5 % were male . The most commonly encountered presentation was pain followed by swelling then tenderness.
More than one presenting symptom was present in every patient.
The menisca/ lesions were the commonest among the internal knee derangements.
