Abstract

In the past decade, substantial efforts and resources have been directed by the Government of Egypt to improving access, reliability and quality of water services in both urban and rural areas. The development and improvement of decentralized onsite sanitation treatment solutions will help eliminate environmental problems and prevent the health risks and diseases caused by the harmful effect of untreated waste water. Fabric Filtration using nonwoven fabrics was found to be an effective tool for waste water treatment in small communities.
This research aims at testing the removal performance and efficiency of various fabrics filters material for the partial treatment of waste water at the bench scale (first phase) and aims also at checking the performance of the best performing filter resulting from the first phase at the full scale in a waste water treatment plant in Fayoum governorate in Egypt using real waste water. Most of the tested fabric filters are locally manufactured low-cost materials. Fabric filters used are made from recycled polyester which is manufactured by using previously used polyester items like PET bottles, polyester cloths etc.. Two locally manufactured fabrics were observed to give the best filtration performance for TSS and COD removal. Backwash was carried out using the pressure head of a 3 m water column and consequently pumps were not used, fulfilling the objective of the research for using a low cost system and eliminating the use of energy. Chemical cleaning was tested using a mixture solution composed of Sodium Hypochlorite in water.
One of the two successful fabric materials was tested during the second phase at the full scale experiment in Fayoum Zawyet El Karatsah waste water treatment plant using real waste water which is resulting from two villages in Fayoum Governorate, Manshiat Abdullah and Zawyat El-Karatsah. It was concluded that the selected fabric can perform well as physical remover of pollutants rather than biological remover
