SlGNlFlCANCE OF Ki-67 (MlBl) EXPRESSION IN BONE TUMOURS
Manal Khamis Galal;
Abstract
The estimation of biologic behaviour in bone tumours is an important clinical problem that is only partially solved by the morphologic parameters, and at the present time no reliable indicator other than histologic grading is available.
Ki-67 (MIB-1) monoclonal antibody, specific for a nuclear antigen that is expressed throughout the cell cycle (G1 ,S,G2 and M), but absent in the quiescent cells (GO), is proposed as a prognostic indicator. Ki-67 immunostaining allows an easy and rapid evaluation of tumour samples. Although the nature of this antigen is still incompletely defined, the reliability of Ki-67 immunostaining as a proliferation marker has been investigated in different tumours, and subsequently applied to a number of neoplasms. However very few data are available on primary bone tumours.
The aim of this work is to study the significance ofKi-67 (MlB l) expression in the most representative bone tumours and its possible role as diagnostic and prognostic parameter in such tumours by comparing Ki-67 expression with histologic grade, type and mitotic index.
The material of this work includes 60 cases of bone tumours, which were collected from the Pathology Department of Ain Shams University and The Pathology Department of Ain Shams Specialized Hospital during the period from 1998-2001.
As regards age and sex in this study, males composed 65% of the patients whereas females comprised 35%.The ages ofthe patients ranged from 4-74 yrs with a mean of 44 yrs.
