Remineralization Potential of Bioactive Glass Containing and Xylitol Containing Toothpastes on Demineralized Enamel surfaces in Primary Teeth.

Enas Hazem Mahmoud El-Sheikh;

Abstract

Modern dentistry’s primary goal is to minimize invasive approach in caries management as caries is considered as an infectious disease, deferring operative intervention with maximum tooth conservation as long as possible by taking advantage of the tooth’s capacity to remineralize in non cavitated early caries lesions. This can be achieved by altering the oral environment, to tip the balance in favor of remineralization rather than demineralization.
The purpose of this study was to compare in vitro the effectiveness of Novamin powered technology toothpaste (SHY-NM)and xylitol containing toothpaste (Tooth Builder) with fluoridated toothpaste (Signal Cavity Fighter) in remineralizing early carious lesions.
Thirty extracted deciduous molars teeth were used in this study. The crowns were embedded in acrylic resin with the labial or lingual enamelsurfaces exposed. Enamel surfaces of the specimens were ground flat using silicon abrasive paper. For baseline data,the enamel surface microhardness of the specimens were measured using microhardness tester and surface mineral content was evaluated using EDX analysis.
All specimens were subjected to demineralization for 96 hours then microhardness values and mineral content were re-measured. Specimens were randomly allocated in three groups. Group (1) treated with fluoridated toothpaste (control), group (2) treated with Novamin toothpaste and group (3) treated with xylitol toothpaste.
