Autologous Fat Grafting in Post-mastectomy Breast Reconstruction: Core Reconstruction and Ancillary Procedure
Mahmoud Yassein Saad;
Abstract
A
utologous fat grafting has been used since many years and becomes rapidly popular especially in Plastic Surgery as it is a low-cost, low-morbidity and easy to perform procedure (Cigna and Monfrecola, 2016).
Nowadays, a great field of application is breast reconstructive surgery in which it can be used for many purpose. It can be associated to the usual techniques of breast reconstruction with flaps or implants, to improve the symmetry and final cosmetic results; or it can be performed to improve the aesthetic outcome of conservative treatment, particularly in the case of defect resulting from the tumor resection followed by the radiotherapy (Lohsiriwat et al., 2011).
The most popular technique of fat liposuction and injection is the one described and standardized by Coleman, in which the fat is harvested from the donor site (for instance hips, abdomen or thighs) centrifuged, decanted and then reinjected in the receiving site as autologous graft. Complication can be represented by partial or complete reabsorption of the injected fat and/or fat necrosis (Cigna and Monfrecola, 2016).
