Studies on Extraction of Uranium and Some Rare Earth Elements from El-Sella Area Using Chelating Resins with Amine and Amino Acid Functionality

Ahmed Abdel-Sattar Ahmed Galhoum;

Abstract

The work carried out in this thesis is given in three main chapters, namely the introduction, experimental, results and discussion.

CHAPTER 1-INTRODUCTION

This chapter represents a scientific and a historical review with the most popular separation and extraction technologies such as precipitation, co precipitation, membrane separation, solvent extraction, flotation, solid phase extraction....etc. A special focus on the literature of raw chitosan, modification, magnetic-chitosan composite, chitosan-based sorbents, nanomaterials and sorption properties in the field of separation and preconcentration of different metal ions.
In addition to theoretical scientific and a historical literature survey about properties of uranium and rare earths occurrences, chemistry, importance, separation and preconcentration methods using different types of chelating resins and their use in the separation ofU(VI) and REEs(III) ions.

CHAPTER 2-EXPERIMENTAL

This chapter represents materials, experiments and techniques that were used in preparation and characterization of different chelating adsorbents; e.g. alanine/serine/cysteine/diethylentriamine moieties grafted on chitosan magnetic nanocomposite adsorbents. It also gives the details of experimentation used in studying the adsorption studies of uranium and REEs(III) where, Dy(III) selected as a simulator of trivalent lanthanide family.
