DRUG ABUSE AS A RISK FACTOR IN TRAUMA PATIENTS IN ISMAILIA GOVERNORATE

Abstract
Trauma has been recognized as a serious public health problem in most countries, being a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. lt is considered the third leading cause of death exceeded by only cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
In 1990, WHO categorized injuries by their external cause and by their pathological outcome in the international classification of diseases.
The younger populations are particularly the victims of trauma; persons under the age of 45 years sustain almost 80% of all injuries and account for 75% of the total mortality. Injuries were the most senous health problem facing this century whether measured 111 dollar costs, physician contacts, premature deaths or loss of productive years of life.
The past 25 years have been a spectacular growth in the illicit drug trade all over the world, consequently the incidence of drug-related injury has steadily risen. Drug abuse and alcohol remains a major• co morbid factor in major trauma and are implicated as a contributing factor in marital violence, occupational injuries and traffic deaths.
The study included 94 trauma patients admitted to emergency departments in Ismailia Governorate hospitals between feb 2000 and July 2000, due to aggression, traffic accidents and falls.
