Abstract

Bladder cancer is the most common of the malignant urothelial tumors. In Egypt it is the most frequent cancer among adult males and the second most common tumor in females.

The atm of this study is to detennine the role of helical computed tomography in staging of urinary bladder cancer and to compare its results with the pathological findings obtained after surgery.

The study was conducted on fifty-five patients with bladder cancer presented to EL Minia Oncology Center. They were forty nine males and six females. Their ages ranged from thirty to seventy one years old. Out of those fifty five patients, fifty patients had pathological proof of bilharziasis.

Hematuria was the most common clinical presentation. Other symptoms were necroturia, frequency, pain, and dysw•ia.

Helical computed tomography was done for all the patients after good preparation. The site of the tumor, extent of tumor growth into the adjacent organs, presence of lymph nodal enlargement, the group involved, and its size, staging of the primary bladder tumors and lymph nodes were detennined for each patients and compared to the pathological findings after radical cystectomy and bilateral extended lymphadenectomy.

The intramural portion of the tumor was demonstrated by CT in the form of a localized mass with well-defined delineation against perivesical fat in twenty four patients.
