Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine antioxidant properties of extracts from the white and black mulberry leaves, fruits and branches bark and their effect on hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic alloxanized rats. Also, this study included, the effect of extracts on HPG2 .The macro-components of different parts of white and black mulberry, also the contents of total phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, chlorophyll, anthocyanins, tannins and vitamin C and E compounds in the ethanolic extracts were analyzed. The highest contents of total phenols and flavonoids compounds were observed in the extracts of branches bark white and black mulberry. While, white and black fruits were rich in vitamin C and E.
Male albino rats Sprague Dawley strain weighing 150-160g were injected by alloxan (150mg/Kg body weight), then fed on ethanolic extracts orally (1ml extract/day for each rat). Data indicated significantly gradual decrease in serum glucose when rats fed on extracts of white and black mulberry parts. Rats fed on white and black bark were decreased significantly in serum glucose (38.78 and 44.73%, respectively) followed by white and black leaves (33.19 and 37.19%, respectively) then white and black fruits (25.91 and 30.15%, respectively). Also, serum total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides LDL and HDL were decreased significantly in all groups fed on mulberry parts extracts orally. These results may be due to the effect of antioxidant to regeneration of β-cells and increase in insulin secretion. It was concluded that, different parts of white and black mulberry (leaves, fruits and branches bark) ethanol extracts act as hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic dietary sources due to their content of different types of antioxidants.
