Developing an appropriate system for onion grading

Harby Mohammed Serour Mostafa;

Abstract

The mam aim of this work was to develop an appropriate system tor onion grading, to improve the quality, reduce losses and costs, this could be achieved by:-
( I) Studying the physical and mechanical properties (equatorial and polar diameters, shape index, volume, density, mass. surface area, rolling angle, coenicient of friction, crushing load, and penetration resistance) of some varieties of onion grown in Egypt.

(2) Designing, manfacturing and evaluating the unit under different operational conditions (belt speed, side and longitudinal angle).
(3)Economic evaluation of the unit.

The most important results could be summarized as follows:

1- Physical and Mechanical Properties

Jl> The equatorial and polar diameters ranged from

5.12±0.33-6.20±1.5 em for all cultivars with CV ranged

11•om I l-25%.

II" Both of red and yellow onion bulbs were spherical in shape while the white onion was regarded as an oval.
