Relationship between Obesity and Iron Deficiency

Abstract
Anemia is a global public health problem affecting both developing and developed countries. Iron deficiency with or without anemia has deleterious consequences for human health.
From the national study on obesity in Egypt, it can be concluded that overweight and obesity prevalence is reaching an alarming rate. Few studies considered relation between body weight and iron deficiency.
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the iron status in obese Egyptian females in comparison to normal weight females.
It was a case control study, conducted in the outpatient clinic of National Nutrition Institute with a sample size of 44 obese females (18-53 years old) and 44 normal weights healthy controls (18-50 years old). All patients were subjected to anthropometric measurement, CBC, iron profile and CRP.
