In the last two decades, more than 70,000 chemicals are commercialy producted and new chemicals are being synthesized each''"-,.. year. Regardless of its intended use, each of these must be tested for
its acute toxicity because of ...concerns for human and animal health. Current testing methods are based primarily on animal lethality studies, which are time consuming and extremely expensive. While it is unlikely fhat the need for such testing ill be totally eliminated, it is desirable to find a rapid, reliable, in vitro method for economical preliminary screening of chemical toxicity
