Abstract

The quest for the ideal keratorefractive surgic;al procedures has been elusive. Over the last I 00 years, the need for improved safety and enhanced efficacy has driven surgical innovation. Yet, every surgical technique under investigation, or in use has been until now limited by wound healing problems, lack of stability, or poor visual function as assessed by contrast sensitivity.

In this century numerous surgical procedures have been devised to modify the refractive power of the eye. Examples of different refractive surgical procedures are, incisional techniques, such as Radial keratotomy (RK) and Astigmatic keratotomy (AK). Lamellar techniques as automated lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) and myopic keratomilcusis (LASIK). New technology such as Intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) are now getting more popularity.
