Khaled Sabry Abd El-Halim Salama;

Abstract

A review of literature was the first feature met to provide an entire comprehension of the subject. It started by a review of the historical aspect of scoliosis. This is followed by -a r eview of the normal alignment of the spine. A selected presentation on biomechanics related to idiopathic scoliosis as then mentioned. The evaluation of the patient with AIS then discussed including both clinical and radiological aspects. This as followed by a review of the indications of surgical treatment in idiopathic scoliosis. Particular stress was laid on the different types of curve patterns and the selection of fusion levels in each type.

This research is a prospective descriptive case series study based on 22 patient with AIS. Their age, sex, presentation and the different curve patterns were clearly documented. Special emphasis as made on the different radiological parameters measured preoperatively. The operative technique performed as then explained in detail.

The result of curve correction were then assessed. First, the results of correction of the overall series were mentioned followed by a thorough analysis of the results of each curve pattern separately. The pre- and postoperative values of the different parameters were clearly stated. The complications encountered in this thesis were the enumerated.

The discussion consisted of an analysis of the results together with its comparison with the results of series published by other authors.
