Use of Buccal Fat Pad for Repair Of Intra-Oral Defects
Rehab Abdel Aziz Abdel Moniem;
Abstract
The BFP has been introduced as uncovered pedicled graft for reconstruction of intra oral defects.
Ten patients were included in this study complaining of presence of benign soft tissue tumours at the upper jaw, they were 5 cases of peripheral giant cell granuloma, 3 cases of pyogenic granuloma and
2cases of pleomorphic adenoma.
The surgical procedures were carried out under general anesthesia. Follow up of the cases was preformed till 12 weeks after surgery, it was done clinically by examining the healing of the BFP and its fusion with the mucosa, presence of any sloughing or inflammation, presence of difference in appearance between the BFP and the surrounding mucosa.
The follow up was carried out at 1 " week, 2 nd week, then at the 1 51
month, 2 nd month, and 3 rd month respectively.
The results showed that the use of BFP for reconstruction of such defects was successful in all patients and complete epithelization of the exposed fat tissue in all cases occurred 4-8 weeks after surgery at the oral side, at that time the flap is covered with healthy- looking oral mucosa.
In conclusion, the BFP flap is useful in reconstructing small to medium sized intra oral defects of the posterior maxilla and buccal region without considerable complications. The multiplex blood supply, facility in accessing and minimal donor site morbidity makes it a reliable soft tissue graft. The main disadvantage is its limited size.
