EHAB MOHAMED ABO AL - MAGD;
Abstract
Chondrosarcoma is malignant tumor of cartilage producing cells. It occurs mainly between the ages of 20 and 60 years. It can present as a primary malignancy or as secondary malignant changes in previous conditions such as osteochondroma or in paget's disease or diaphyseal aclasis.
The bones most commonly involved are pelvis, proximal femur & proximal humerus. Clinically there are two types of Chondrosarcoma.
-Central Which is usually in-tramedullary & primary.
-Peripheral : Cortical in site but spreading out into soft tissues.
There is new classificaiton of Chondrosarcoma appeared based on the microscopic picture, in which •there are five types of Chondrosarcoma : central, mesencymal, myxoid, clear cell & dediffrentianed sarcoma.
Diagnosis of the tumour depends primarly on its detection by X-ray, CT - scan or MRI, and proved after taking biopsy from the lesion. Nowadays the specimen not only undergoes the usual pathological studies, but also a new biological invistigations which includes immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and cytogenetics.
