Systematic review on pronator teres rerouting in children with cerebral palsy
Ahmed Abdullah Ahmed Abdelkader;
Abstract
Cerebral palsy is a static neurologic condition resulting from brain injury that occurs before cerebral development is complete.The primary effect of cerebral palsy is impairment of muscle tone, gross and fine motor functions, balance, control, coordination, reflexes, and posture.
Forearm pronation is usually caused by spasticity of both the pronator teres and pronator quadratus muscles.
Pronator teres rerouting was first described by Sakellarides et al. The procedure includes release of the pronator teres tendon from its insertion and transfer of the tendon posteriorly to the opposite side of the radius so that it functions as a supinator.
In this work we reviewing five papers in which studies on 137 patient with cerebral palsy underwent pronator teres rerouting and improvement in supination ,proantion and functionality are measured.
After this study, pronator teres is a safe and effective procedure to correct pronation deformity in children with cerebral palsy mainly those between 6 and 8 years old
