Abstract

The present work aimed to measure IFN-gamma level in serum in patients having hepatic C virus infection, cytomegalovirus infection or chlamydia! infection in order to study its role in the host immune response against these infections. The study was done on 516 patients. The results showed that the mean of serum IFN-y level was significantly higher in the hepatitis C virus group, cytomegalovirus group and chlamydia group compared to controls. Interferon-gamma is crucial for the host immune response against each of the studied infections. Thus, using IFN-y as a prophylaxis or in therapeutic trials might be of great value for patients-suffering f om any of these infections.
