AN INTELLIGENT MODEL FOR UNDERSTANDING NATl.JRAL ARABIC LAi GUAGE
Salwa Elsayed Hamada;
Abstract
Success in NLU, as in many hard areas of AI, has been slow in coming, and achieved at great cost in thought and effort. It remains as the Holy Grail of AI research since success in creating a computer system that truly understands general human conversation and responds appropriately would pass anyone's test for AI. Apart from the philosophical implication of such success, the practical applications are breathtaking. Consider for example:
* Removal of the language barrier to machines.
* Removal of the language barrier between people 'Natural language translation'.
• Remove the "knowledge bottleneck": As we have frequently noted, knowledge is the basis for intelligent behavior of systems. The problem of getting knowledge into machines in a representation that allows the computer to understand it has been described as the "knowledge bottleneck". If this is done computers could in effect "read books" and collect and organize knowledge in much the same way humans do.
The following items will be considered to provide successful NLU:
• New reformation to Arabic language rules in a modernized form 'point of view of computational linguistics' to meet the needs for people using it.
* Studying semantic behavior of the syntactic components.
* Building syntactic knowledge around syntactic relations.
* Building powerful structured lexicon for providing a context dependent
mapping from words to a set of possible senses
