PREVALENCE OF MICROALBUMINURIA AMONG OBESE CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS, AND ITS RELATION TO OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS

Mohamed Aly Yassin Ibrahim;

Abstract

T
he aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of microalbuminuria among obese children and adolescents and its relation to other cardiovascular risk factors. It included 15 obese children, selected from Obesity clinic ,Ain- Shams University, Children hospital.
Cases were divided into two groups according to the level of albuminuria; the first group included children with urine albumin levels ≤ 20mg/24 hours (9 cases; 60.0%) and the second group included children with urine albumin levels > 20mg/24hours (6 cases; 40%).
All children were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, anthropometric measurements and laboratory investigations (plasma glucose; plasma insulin; lipid profile and serum creatinine;OGTT;microalbuminuria).
The results of the present study revealed that; there was significant decrease of birth weight in obese children with normo-albuminuria when compared to obese children with micro-albuminuria.
In addition, life style was associated with development of microalbuminuria.
Finally, there was a positive significant correlation between microalbuminuria and life style and plasma glucose after 1 and 1.5 hours; and between W/H ratio and high density lipoprotein.
On the other hand, no significant difference was obtained between both groups as regard other studied parameters.
One limiting factor in our study is the small number of obese children included in the present study, preventing us to generalize the results of the present study.
