Abstract

The present study was done at Ain Shams University hospital, started at February 2012 and finished at July 2014 and included 100 patients with sclerocalcific aortic valve disease diagnosed by routine transthoracic echocardiography.
The studied patients weredivided into three groups according to severity of sclerocalcific aortic valve changes:
Group A:
Patients who hadMildsclerocalcific aortic valve changes (minor involvement of one leaflet)
This group included 40 patients
Group B:
Patients who hadModeratesclerocalcific aortic valve changes (minorinvolvement of two leaflets or extensive involvement of oneleaflet)
This group included 39 patients
Group C:
Patients who hadSeveresclerocalcific aortic valve changes (extensive involvement of two leafletsor involvements of all three leaflets)
This group included 21 patients

We studied the prevalence of carotid artery disease in patients with Aortic Valve Sclerosis“AVS”. We excluded all patients with history of diabetes mellitus, chronic renal insufficiency, prosthetic aortic valve, rheumatic valvular heart diseases, Poorly echogenic aortic valve.
All patients were subjected to carotid duplex assessment and carotid artery disease was diagnosed by presence ofcarotid intema media thickness “IMT”> 0.8 mm or carotid plaque and considered significant if causing stenosis more than 50%.
All selected patients were subjected to full history taking, transthoracic echocardiography (2D, M mode & Doppler),then they were subjected to carotid duplex assessment
In the current study carotid artery disease was found in 75% of patients with aortic sclerocalcific changes.
