EVALUATION OF LOCAL INJECTION OF BOTULINUM TOXIN-A, IN TWO DIFFERENT DOSES, IN TREATMENT OF FACIAL HYPERKINETIC WRINKLE LINES IN EGYPTIANS

Shady Fikrey Abd El-Salam;

Abstract

There are different causes for facial wrinkle lines, as intrinsic & photoaging, gravity, and chronic pulling of mimetic muscles on the face. Among these, pulling by mimetic muscles seems to be of great role in forming facial lines as a result of repetitive action. (Gilchrest & Yaar,
1992, Ki-Young et al., 2000)5,6

Treatment options of these facial lines (frontal lines, glabellar lines or crow's feet) either by surgical intervention or implants do not address the underlying cause, namely the excessive muscle movement (Pribitkin E et al., 1997, Luff, 1998, Boni et al., 2000f,s, 1

Botulinum toxin comprises a family of neurotoxins, produced during the autolysis of the anaerobic clostridium botulinum. BTX-A blocks the cholinergic transmission resulting in flaccid paralysis which makes it an ideal agent to target the major cause of hyperkinetic facial
lines (Doni et al., 2000)1

Racial variations m skin function and skeletal muscle characteristics may play a role in differences in skin and muscle reactivity in physiological and pathological conditions (Ama et al., 1986, Berardesca,1994, Berardesca & Maibacb 1996, Fields et al., 1997)12 13•11. Many articles have been published reporting on the use of BTX-A to treat facial hyperkinetic wrinkles but, none of them has been done on
Egyptians.
