SUMMARY

Manzala Lake is the most important of the Delta lakes. It is very important as a fish source. It is characterized by a numerous aquatic plants and many kinds of migratory and resident birds. But, with increasing discharges of industrial wastes, sewage and agricultural drainage into the lake, leads to decreasing of these resources .On the other hand the lake contaminated with organic and inorganic compounds which in tum adversely affect on the lake ecosystem. To investigate the occurrence of organochlorine compounds in the lake, different types of samples were taken to represent a food chain (water, sediment, plant, fish and birds). The samples were analyzed by using gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector.

The study showed the following:

1- Organochlorines in the water

Lindane was detected with an average concentration of 6.1 ng/1. HCB was

' '
detected with average concentration of 3.17 ng/L. DDTs were the following order

p,p'-DDE > p,p'-DDT > p,p'-DD. D. It is n.oted that samples f.rom Bahr -El-Baqar

didn't contain any DDT residues. PCBs (1254,1260) were found with an average concentrations of28 ng/L and 5 ng/L, respectively.
