Studies on Certain Natural Enemies of the Whiteflies

Ahmed Hasan Ali Mesbah;

Abstract

Whiteflies are serious insect pests which attack several host plants causin g severe damage such as sucking plant syrups, transmitting virus
diseases, a nd secreting honeydew.

In m ost cases, insecticides fail in suppressing white•fly populations, because th ese insects are readily acquire resista nce against repeatedly applied insecticides. In addition, the insects are usually located on the
l ower l eaf surface, and thus the insectici.des hardl y reach to the insect. AI

the sa m e time, the applied insecticides greatly destruct the natural enemies of the insect, and consequently pest resurgence occurs.

The current study was carried out at Kafr El -Sheikh governorate (Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr EI-Sheikh, Tanta Uni ve rsity, Sakha A!:,'Tic ultura l Research Station, and other fields) throughout the period from
M<1 y , 1 992 to December, 1994. It aimed at surveyi ng parasitoids <1ncl
pred8tors of w hiteflies; Bemisia tabaci (Genn) an d IJialeurodes cilri (Ashm.) occurring on some important host plants to determine their rol e in suppressing the insect popul ation. The considered host plcmts were co tton (and associated weeds), eggpl ant, l antana and citrus trees.
