ASSESSMENT OF LEPTIN HORMONE LEVEL CHANGES AFTER SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY AND INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON

Abstract
Obesity is a chronic disease that impairs health-related quality of life in adolescents and children.
Leptin acts as an anorexigenic molecule (Roubos et al., 2012). Leptin is proportionally released to the amount of fat stored in the white adipose tissue and acts in hypothalamic suppression of food intake and increase in energy expenditure(Belgardt and Brüning, 2010).
The aim of our study is to determine the hormonal influenceof sleeve gastrectomy and intragastric balloon in morbidly obese patients by measurement of leptin hormone level before and after the operation .This study was conducted at Ain Shams Hospital and different private hospitals in Cairo in which BIB and sleeve gastrectomy were done.
In our study, the placement of the BIB for 6 months resulted in a statistically significant reduction in body weight. The mean loss of weight was20 kg. Also LSG caused statistically significant reduction in body weight. The mean weight loss was 30.4 kg at 6 months after the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
Regarding the hormonal influence of BIB and LSG, Leptin showed a significant decrease 6 months after the insertion of the balloon. The mean decline of leptin hormone level was8 μg/L. While in LSG, the mean decline of leptin hormone level was17.6μg/L. The significant decrease in leptin hormone level 6 months after sleeve gastrectomy and BIB application predicts weight loss maintenance.
These findings conclude that BIB and LSG have a beneficial effect on reducing body weight and also a hormonal influence of decreasing leptin hormone level. These effects were obtained after 6 months of follow up but still need further studying on long term follow up to assure the continuity of these effects.
