BIOCHEMCAL STUDIES on T'issue and Serum of Patients with Malignant Diseases

Abstract

Tumor markers are components which occur in cancer tissue and in serum of cancer patients, where they can be detected by biochemical and serological techniques. They have gained importance in cancer research as well as for practical clinical use. To be clinically relevant, a tumor markers should
meet the following criteria :

1. 100% specificity.

2. 100016 sensitivity.

3. Production proportional to tumor mass, and

4. Serum level proportional to tumor mass.

As 1t is well known, not a single of the presently used tumor markers does reach these high standards. Nevertheless they are of clinical value if used 1n the right mannar.
In this study. fifty five cancer patients (40-65 years old)

were classified by specialists into four groups 1n addition to 15 normal healthy subjects served as a control group. Serum and tissue samples were collected for some biochemical and haematologtcal investigations. They were grouped as follows: Gr. la&b NC (15), Prostate cancer(15) (Gr. Ila&b P.C), Breast

cancer (15) (Gr. Illa&b B.C). Gastrointestinal cancer (15) (Gr. IVa&b GITC) and acute lymphocytic leukaemia (10)
