SEDIMENTOLOGICAL STUDIES ON SOME QUATERNARY ROCKS IN QATAR, ARABIAN GULF

Alia Jassim M. AI Kuwari;

Abstract

This study focuses on the mineralogical, petrological I
and facies characteristics of the Quaternary marine deposits I
which are exposed in the coastal plain of the Qatar Peninsula. I It aims at the recognition of their provenance, depositional I environments and history of diagenesis. I
Tewelve statigraphic sections representing the I
Quaternary marine sequence along the coastline of Qatar I
were selected for the study. They were measured at AI Wakrah, Bilad Ibrahim, Sumaysima, AI Khor and Adh Dhakhira on the eastern coast of Qatar, at Al Jassasiya, Fuwayrit;Al Arish and Az Zubarah on the northern coast and at Bir Zikrit, North Dukhan and South Dukhan on the western coast. These sections were selected in such a way to elucidate the variations in the nature of the Quaternary deposits both areally and vertically.

Field observations on the studied Quaternary sequence revealed that it consists predominantly of detrital carbonates and comprises three lithostratigraphic units having different textural and compositional characteristics. These rock units are variably recorded in the different parts of the coastal plain of Qatar. Moreover, their thicknesses and facies
characteristics display marked lateral variations.
