Liaison Psychiatric Nursing Care of Stroke Patients at Assiut University Hospital

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the educational training program of coping skills addressed to assist nursing staff and caregivers. The study was carried-out on "50" stroke patients, "50" of patient's relative in the neurology department assigned for care of stroke patients and all nurses (n = 34). The study was conducted at Assiut University hospital. Four tools were used, the psycho-organic assessment, Beck depression inventory, state-trait anxiety inventory and coping scale. The educational training program of coping methods designed for nurses and caregivers. The study results revealed that the majority of the sample were males ranging from 40-60 years (54%) male, 70o/o, married 86%, 66% illiterate, 36% were farmers,
56% had left hemiplegia, 34% hypertensive, 74% had cerebral infarction,
50% had no sleep disturbance, 32% had depressed mood and 48% had anxious affect, 16% had hallucinations, 12% had delusions, 84% had dementia, 90% of them disoriented, 72% had impaired judgement. Age have no significant correlation with depression, while anxiety occurred more among younger age, depression . and anxiety occurred more in females, single groups, students and illiterate patients. Active coping methods were significantly used by younger aged patients, there was no effect of gender on the used coping methods or marital status. 58% of female nurses attended the educational training program. 66% of caregivers were males.
Our study can conclude that the liaison psychiatric nursing was very important to be included in the care of these stroke patients as a result of this study, an important recommendations was drawes regarding to the role of liaison psychiatric nursing in the care of stroke patients direct and indirect help for nurses and caregivers.
