EVALUATION OF THE USE OF α1 ADRENOCEPTOR ANTAGONIST ( DOXAZOSIN MESYLATE) IN TREATMENT OF SYMPTOMATIC BLADDER OUTLET OBSTRUCTION

Abstract


In this study , 50 patients with symptoms suggestive or infi•avesical obstruction were treated by alpha I - adrenergic blocker (Doxazosin ) . They were divided into three groups:-



Group 1 :-

Included 20 patients suffering from symptomatic BPI-I with mild and moderate degrees of obstruction . This group was given medical treatment ( Doxazosin ),I mg once daily for one week, than 2 mgms dnily for another one week and then 4 mgms daily for the remaining I 0 weeks.


Group II :-

Twenty patients suffering from blndcler neck obstruction were given Doxazosin as group A .


Group 111:-

Ten pntients suffering from BPH and BN obstruction were given placebo. for 3 months .



The mean obstructive symptom score for BPI-I group was 9.7, compared to a mean of 12.8 in the BNO group and 9.3 for the placebo group before beginning treatment. After three months treatment with Doxazosin according to the previously mentioned regimen,the obstructive symptom score became 4.1 for the BPH group , 7.I for the BNO group nnd 9.4 for the placebo.
