HYDROGEOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE AREA LOCATED TO THE NORTHEAST OF ASSIUT CITY

MAHMOUD HAMED AHMED DARWISH;

Abstract

The area under consideration lies to the east of the River Nile northeast of Assiut City. It limited by the latitudes 27° 05" and 27° 25"
N and the longitudes 31o oo• and 31o 25" E covering about 276 km2

The present work aims to study the hydrogeological conditions and hydrogeochemical characters of groundwater aquifers in the area. One of the main target of the present study is to identify the groundwater in the area suitable for various uses.

The field activities during this work including many data were measured and collected. These data are infiltration tests, pumping and recovery tests, ground elevations, groundwater wells locations, depths and levels, lithological sequence of groundwater wells and seventy one groundwater samples.

According to the landsat-5 TM image (path 176 row 41) which was collected on Nov. 1988, the main soil types in the area are: Gravely and limy soils, loamy soils, clay soils.

The basic infiltration rate in the area is ranged between 1.03 cmlh and 28. 7 cm/h depending on the change in the soil types and textures.

The study area is completely covered by sedimentary rocks belonging to the lower Eocene, Plio-Pleistocene and Holocene times. According to Said's tectonic frameworlvofEgypt (1961 and1962) the area lies within the stable shelf of Egypt.
