EVALUATION of ANTERIOR CERVICAL MICRODISCECTOMY WITH OR WITHOUT BONE GRAFTING IN CERVICAL DISEASES

Abstract

Anterior cervical mi,crodiscectomy without bone fusion has been usually associated with postoperative neck pain, cervical curve deformity, and low fusion rate. Anterior cervical microdiscec.tomy with autologous bone fusion has been associated with graft harvesting problerru: such as pain, infection, haematomas, nerve injury, and iliac crest deformity, as well as graft and fusion problems such as non-union, graft collapse or dislodgement. Auwlogous bone graft substitutes have been tried to circumvent these graft related problems, however, each of these substitutes has its own drawbacks. Many problems ha.ve been reported with these autologous bone graft substitutes including; biocompatibility, biodegradability or resorbability, and biomechanical strength. BOP has been used in many centres as a biodegradable implant to circumvent these problems. Hospital stay is an important factor to be considered in the recent era of cCJst consciousness.
