Abstract
Geographic Information System (GIS) have become the most advanced and efficient system for handling different types of data at the local, national and international levels. GIS are used for storing, processmg, retrieving and analyzing huge amount of spatial and attribute data.
The maJor source of spatial data for any GIS is digital maps, which represent the core of these systems. The accuracy, consistency and robustness of any Geographic Information System depends totally on the accuracy of the spatial database, and consequently on the accuracy of the input digital maps. Moreover, the cost of the map production process constitutes the major portion of the total cost of the GIS.
