FOLEY CATHETER INSERTION VERSUS PROSTAGLANDIN E2 IN PREINDUCTION CERVICALRIPENING FOR INDUCTION OF LABOR

Shawki Abd ElAziz Rashwan;

Abstract

Management of the pregnant patient who has an unfavorable cervix at term and is a candidate for induction of labor remains contraversial. Prostaglandins have been used vaginally for the induction of labor for the past 20 years, during which time there has been a variety of different vehicles into
which the prostaglandins have been incorporated, as well as

different doses used recommended.

and administration protocols

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Foley catheter in comparison to the intravaginal PGdinoprostone suppositories (prostin E 2) as it may be a cheap and available alternative of the expensive dinoprostone.

Fifty patients with indications for induction of labor and unfavorable cervices were randomly selected, twenty-five of them were assigned to receive intravaginal dinoprostone (3 mg) while the Foley catheter was introduced intracervically in the other twenty-five patients.

There was no significant differences in the two studied groups regarding the rate of vaginal delivery but the change in the Bishop score of the dinoprostone group was significantly higher than that of the Foley catheter group (especially regarding the consistency of the cervix).
